RILEM Tube

By: Gil Castonquay

When faced with the challenge of identifying causes or sources of water intrusion on a building enclosure, building scientists and design professionals performing forensic building enclosure analysis have a multitude of diagnostic tools and methods which to consider.

Here, we are demonstrating the use of the lesser known and used RILEM Tube as a diagnostic device in the evaluation of water leakage pathways at a crack in stucco cladding.  Originally developed in France to evaluate the water absorption of masonry products, RILEM Tubes can be used to test various other wall conditions and have proven to be an invaluable diagnostic device in determining water leakage dynamics in small, isolated, wall components/systems, including but not limited to stucco, EIFS, masonry, window joints, and the many interfaces between abutting wall and building enclosure components.
